Idol importance: The main idol in this temple is Sarvamangala Sametha Sri Pallikondeswara Swamy. The idol Lord Shiva in this temple is in reclining position and is on the lap of Goddess Parvathi (sarvamangala). So this temple is called Sayana Sivalayamu, also called as Pradosha Kshetramu, Nandi kshetramu. Surul means God, all the Gods and Goddesses came here to see Lord Shiva who slept for a second after drinking poison under the pagada tree. So it is called as Surutipalli. The temple was built during the Vijayanagara dynasty by Harihara Bukkaraya at the period of 1344-1377.
Link to Puranas: Once a sage Durvaasa prayed Lord Shiva and Paarvathi with Paarijatha flowers. Then he came to Indra to give that flower garland. But Indra asked his Airavatham (elephant the vehicle of Indra) to take the flower. But while taking the garland one bee which is in the flower bit the elephant and it threw away the garland. Sage Durvasa got angry and cursed Indra. Due to this Indra along with all Gods and Goddesses lost their eternity and wealth. They all prayed Vishnu and he said to drink Nectar ( Amrutham) which they will get from Ksheera Sagara Madhanam. Indra asked Vishnu as all of them became old they alone cannot do that. Lord Vishnu asked them to take the help of demons.
Taking Mandhara Hill as churner and Vasuki snake as rope Gods and demons started churning the Ksheera Sagaram. They started on the 11th day of the month. That is, Ekadashi day continues on the next day, which is Dwadasi, the 12th day of the month. With the pain of churning Haala (poison) came out from Ocean. To save the world Lord shiva drank the poison on Trayodashi day and slept for a second on the lap of Goddesses Parvathi under the pagada tree ( Spanish cherry) in this place of Surutipalli. This idol of Lord Shiva is Pallikondeswara swamy and the Parvati is Sarvamangala Ambika. During this time when shiva slept on the lap of Parvathi The Gods and Godesses came to see this shiva and they are Brigu Maharshi, Brahma, Vishnu, Markandeya, Naarada Muni, Chandrudu, Kuberudu, Sooryudu, Agastya Maharshi, Kulastya Maharshi, Gouthama Maharshi, Thumburudu, Vasishta Maharshi, Vaalmiki Maharshi, Viswamithra Maharshi, Indra, Gandharwulu, Ganapathi, Valli Devasena Samatha Subramanyasway. Infront ofLord Shiva we can see Navagrahas.
This is the only place where we can see Dampathi sametha Dakshinamurthy. Dakshinamurthy can be seen on vrushabha vahanam and his consort is called as Gauri here.
Amudha Ambika: When Lord Shiva drank poison Goddess Bhuvaneswari held the throat of Lord Shiva to stop the poison in the throat. That is why the shiva throat is black colour (Neela varnama). and is called Neelakhantudu.
Pradosham: pradosham is the dusk time at the time of sunset. Lord shiva drank poison on Trayodashi day, which is the 13th day of the month, on Saturday at dusk time. So when trayodasi is on Saturday then it is called Sanimahaa Pradoshamu and a special Pooja is performed during this time to Lord Shiva.
Nandi: Nandi is the vehicle of Lord Shiva. During the Pradosha time when Lord Shiva slept then Nandi took off the job of Lord Shiva and when he woke up everyone was praising Nandi for taking care of Shiva's job. Lord Shiva has given Nandi boon saying that as daily offerings are first to Lord Shiva and then Nandi but on Trayodashi day of Pradohsam the offerings should be first to Nandi and then to Lord Shiva.
River Aruna: Goddess Saraswathi came as Aruna River. Once Lord Brahma and Saraswathi came to earth to perform Pooja to Lord Shiva swayambhu Linga which is situated on a hill near to this temple. Excited with the beauty of nature Saraswathi went a long way and when Brahma wanted to perform abhishekam he called Bharathi then Saraswathi became a river and reached the kamandalam of Brahma. Lord Brahma performed abhishekam to Shiva lingam with that water. So it is called River Aruna and Brahma is called Kaaraneeswarudu.
Most beautiful and rarest Shiva temple to be visited in Andhra Pradesh.
