Veda Narayana Swamy Temple, Nagalapuram
The Veda Narayana Swamy Temple is situated in Nagalapuram, Chittoor District. It is 65 kilometres from Tirupathi. This temple is the first incarnation of Lord Vishnu which is in the form of a Fish to rescue the Vedas and this is called as the Matsyavatharam.
Nagalapuram also called as Arigandapuram meaning bodes danger to enemies. Brahma could not find Vishnu in Vaikuntam. So He came in search of God and found Him here, so it is named as Harigandapuram which means a place where Hari is found. He rescued the vedas here so the God here is called as Veda Narayana Swamy. It is also called as Vedapuri, Vedaaranya Kshetramu.
The idol in this temple is Vedavalli Sametha Lakshmi Narayana Swamy. The upper part is human and lower part is fish.The Idol is in standing position and holding chakra indicating that the Somakasura was just killed using the Chakra.
The First incarnation of Lord Vishnu is in the form of a Fish in Nagalapuram. The idol in this temple is swaymbhu( came out of earth) and Later Krishnadevaraya came to know about this temple when he was on his way from Kumbhakonam. Lord Vedanarayana Swamy appeared in the dream of King Krishnadevara and asked him to built the temple. The temple was constructed during Krishnadevaraya period.
Link to puranas. Once there was a demon called Somakasura. He stole Vedas from Lord Brahma and escaped into the Ocean. Lord Vishnu in the incarnation of a Large fish killed Somakasura and saved the Vedas.
Significance: The Sun God is worshipped for 5 days from 24th March to 28th March.The sun rays directly fall on the main idol for 5 days consecutively. First 2 days on feet, Navel (Naabhi) on third day and last 2 days on Face. Nothing is an obstruction to reach the sun rays on the idol during these 5 days. The sun festival and Mastya Jayanthi are the popular festivals celebrated in this temple.
Other temples in the premises are Sita Ramachandra, Lakshmi Narasimha Swami, Viranjaneya Swami, 12 Alwars, Lakshmi Narayana and Vishvaksena. The temple was taken over by TTD in April,1967. Brahmotsavam is celebrated in this temple in the same manner as in Tirumala.
