How to crochet a Granny Square (step by step instructions)
Granny Square is a unique pattern which can be used in preparing different crochet projects like hat, blanket, hand bag, shawl etc.. It gives an elegant and attractive look to the finished product. The granny square I have done is only of 3 rows, but you can expand it how much large you need by counting the number of crochets which I have given in detail at the bottom of the post.
Here is the procedure to crochet a Granny Square.
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Things you need:
Crochet needle
Wool ( here I used two colours)
Procedure:
Do 6 chains and join with slip stitch.
First Row : 3 chains 2 double crochet again 3 chains 3 double crochet
3 chains 3 double crochet, 3 chains 3 double crochet and join with slip stitch.
Below are the images in sequence.
For the second round I changed the colour to white and you can see in the above corner image how to insert another colour in to the loop.
3 chain, 2 double crochet in scallop, 3 double crochet above previous line and 2 double crochet in scallop.
3 chain 2 double crochet in scallop, 3 double crochet above previous line and 2 double crochet in scallop.
3 chain 2 double crochet in scallop, 3 double crochet above previous line and 2 double crochet in scallop
Join with slip stitch. It will be like in the below image.
For 3rd row insert blue colour wool again
3 chains, 4 double crochet above previous line and 2 double crochet in scallop.
3 chains, 2 double crochet in scallop, 7 double crochet above previous line and 2 double crochet in scallop.
Like this complete the square and join with slip stitch.
If you observe keenly the 3 chains in every corner is to form the square shape and for 1st row you will get 3 double crochet on four sides, 2nd row 7 double crochet on four sides and 3 rd row 11 double crochet on four sides. For every row we increase 4 double crochet to expand the granny square. You can expand the granny square as big as you can by following the same pattern.
